The Surf Sequence® Method
Most surfers stay at the same level for years — not from lack of waves, but because nobody told them what to work on today. Same waves, real progress.
Aligned with International Surfing Association coach education standards
Most surfers train on intuition: they paddle out hoping for a good session, without knowing their real level or what today’s work is. The Surf Sequence replaces hope with structure — the same way martial arts did — without losing what surfing is: play.
An honest starting point. The level test tells you where you actually are, and what the next level asks of you.
LevelSkill in order. Every skill broken into ordered pieces: what to learn, in what order, and what unlocks next.
OrderPhysical · Technical · Tactical · Mental, assessed at every level. The bottom turn that fails is not always a bottom turn problem.
PillarsOne intention per session. Every session has a mission, a dose and a review. The prize is executing it, not the perfect wave.
MissionA verified level and an honest score across the four pillars.
Your gaps, in priority order — not a hundred corrections at once.
The drill for the sand, the mission for the water, the dose for today.
A record of what you did and how it changed — proof, not a feeling.
Where am I, where am I going, what do I need, how do I train it. You revisit it every few months.
Seven steps you run every time you paddle out. Without the map, the loop is activity without direction. Without the loop, the map is a wish.
One intention for the session — a detail, a manoeuvre, or a score-building mission.
Look before you enter: conditions, crowd, energy, your own state.
Match the task and your expectations to your level and the day.
The breath, the ritual — leave on the beach whatever you carried from the day.
A concrete dose: this many waves, this many attempts, this much time.
Did the thing you came to do happen? Rate your focus. If something failed — which pillar?
One decision for next time: repeat, progress, simplify, adjust, change, reassess — or advance.
Two valid paths. Competitor and personal progression. Same levels, same method — only what you are building toward changes.
Six levels — internally we call them belts, like a martial art: each one is earned by verified competence, never by hours in the water. More than one in three surfers place themselves at least one level above their real performance — internal data, 3,000+ surfers assessed. Honesty here is the foundation of everything after.

The ocean is alive and the board is not. Everything is new — and that is exactly right.
SEQ 1–5 · Mission Series
You can stand up. Now you learn what to do once you are standing — and to catch your own waves.
SEQ 6–7 · Paddling & Entry
You have real skills; now the gaps become visible. The work moves onto the wave: speed and line.
SEQ 8–13 · Rail Changes
You are building a real game — and dismantling it at the same time. Progressive surfing, style forming.
SEQ 14–17
The technique is there. The mental game is the frontier: performing when it matters.
SEQ 18–20
You are not chasing the next level — you are refining this one. And you can now pass the system on.
SEQ 21+Not sure where you are? A short test places you — and gives you the address your training starts from.

Not a technique manual, not a collection of drills: the system’s foundation. How to train with intention, set expectations from your real level, work with fear, find the right size of challenge, and turn every session into one mission with one review.
The remarkable thing is not the app — it is the method. The app is the tool you apply it with, session by session.
Your level, the sequences behind you and the one in front of you — the whole progression on a single screen.
Where you areOpen it before you paddle out and it tells you what to train, how much of it, and what to look for.
One missionEvery technique has a reference clip. Drop in your own footage and watch both at once.
Side by sideEvery session logged against the four pillars, so the next level is a decision based on evidence.

Who created it
Marcelo Castellanos is a surf coach and educator with over 30 years of surfing experience and 15+ years of real-world coaching. He has worked with surfers from complete beginners to elite-level competitors, educated and certified coaches through International Surfing Association programs, led seminars and long-term training processes, and founded Puro Surf, a performance-based surf training academy.
The Surf Sequence® is the result of years spent coaching, testing and refining learning systems — in the ocean and beyond — to understand how surfers actually learn, progress and sustain long-term improvement.
This is not theory. It’s experience turned into a system.
Beyond the water
A single drop falls into still water and its circles keep expanding. Compartiendo Olas is our inclusive program with one mission: sharing the message of awareness through surfing. Athlete development scholarships, camps that introduce kids to the ocean for the first time, and the experience of surfing carried with a message of empowerment and opportunity.
A percentage of everything The Surf Sequence earns goes directly to the program.
